 Programmable Thermostats Save Money

You can save around 10% a year on your heating and cooling bills by turning your thermostat back 10°–15° for at least eight hours. You can do this by setting your temperature several degrees warmer in the summer and several degrees cooler in the winter while you are away or at work.

Turning the thermostat way up or way down will not heat or cool an area faster. Typically a home can only be changed by 2 degrees an hour. So, setting the temperature significantly higher or lower will only exhaust your heating and air conditioning system while using up substantial money and energy.

It is recommended to keep your house at 78° when you are home and 85° when you are away during the warmer months. You can save anywhere between 1 and 3 percent per degree, for each degree the thermostat is set above 72 degrees. So, set your programmable thermostat to save money and be warm and worry free.

It is a common misconception that heating units have to work harder than normal to warm a space back up from a lower temperature. This is not the case. Several research studies suggest that it takes less energy to warm a house up from a cooler temperature than it does to keep it heated at a higher temperature so that it can be heated up more quickly later. A programmable thermostat will allow you set a cooler temperature while you’re asleep and a warmer one for you to wake up to.

The location of your thermostat can make a big difference. Be sure to keep your thermostat away from direct sunlight, drafts, doorways, windows or skylights.

Heat and cool your home in a more consistent fashion and you will likely see significant energy savings
If you hold or override your settings, don’t forget to change them back to the program when you leave.

If your programmable thermostat runs on batteries don’t forget to change the batteries every year. It will run more efficiently with new batteries.

According to Energy Star®, Americans saved $14 billion on their utility bills in 2006 by using these tips. The use of Programmable Thermostats saved enough energy to prevent greenhouse gas emissions equivalent to the emissions of 25 million vehicles.
